Question: Can you tell me what Jeyes is, and what it may be called in the US?

Answer:

Jeyes is a chemical disinfectant, marketed as Jeyes Fluid by:

Jeyes Limited
Thetford
Norfolk
England.

It is a combination of Tar Oils and Vegetable Oil Soap.  It is used for general disinfecting of drains, dustbins, patios, kennels, yards, cleaning moss and algae from paths etc, sterilisation of soils and greenhouses.

Please note that it is an irritant and is normally used diluted.  It is covered by the Control of Pesticides Regulations 1986 (UK control).

I don't know what the equivalent would be in the US, but if anyone does please let us know, so that it can be placed in our FAQ.

Question:How do I control extreme cases of Fuchsia Rust?

Answer:

The use of Nimrod T is recommended, but it is not always effective in the eradication of the disease from Fuchsias.

One year when my plants were bit by the dreaded orange pustules, and showing no signs of relenting, I reached for a remedy not recommended.  I sprayed with Murphy's Tumbleblight II. This is, I know, not recommended, due to the damage it can cause to fuchsias, but when rust problems have been severe I have always used it at slightly less than the recommended strength and found it effective without causing damage.

This is a personal risk and 1 would not recommend this course of action to anyone else. Proceed with extreme caution if you intend to have a go.
