NAS - NOT AS SCHEDULE - the phrase positively shouts at you and is disliked by many. I think it is one of the judges tools that is not used enough or effectively. If an exhibit does not conform to the class or rules of the schedule it should be marked NAS, phrased in such a manner that it is informative with out being offensive. Mostly judges ignore the exhibit and pretend that it is not there, but it is there, and the public will see it. If it is a good plant they will wonder why it has not got a card. The exhibitor will be disappointed and wonder the same, so this will be two sources of " Oh no! more blind judges". Also the judges could be wrong and unless there is an opportunity to discuss these matters judges will never be held in the esteem that they should be. IMHO DJL

NECTAR - sugary fluid excreted by flowers to attract insects to aid in the pollination of the plant.

NEGLECT - plants at your peril. Neglected plants seem to attract more pests and diseases.

NEMATICIDES - used to control eelworms.

NEMATODES - friend and foe depending on which nematode is present. Friendly nematodes can be purchased to control slugs and vine weevil grubs. For more information try web site: http://www.weevil.org.uk/

NITRATE OF POTASH - saltpetre - half ounce to one gallon of water promotes better colour and more flowers to develop. NITROGEN - sulphate of ammonia, dried blood and nitro chalk are all high in nitrogen. A plant deficient in nitrogen will be stunted, and look in poor health and have poor coloured leaves. Light sand and other soils lacking in organic matter.

NOVICES - remember that we were all novices once, so help those that are not as knowledgeable as yourself.

NPK - the chemical symbols representing nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Found on fertiliser packaging NPK 20 20 20 the numbers representing the percentage of each.

NUTRIENTS - The nutrients required by plants are as follows: C Carbon , H Hydrogen , O Oxygen, all found in water and air. N Nitrogen , P Phosphorous , and K Potassium , the NPK referred to on all packets of fertiliser. Ca Calcium , S Sulphur, Mg Magnesium, Cl Chlorine, Fe Iron, B Boron, Mn Manganese, Zn Zinc, Cu Copper, Mb Molybdenum. All of these can be purchased from Chempak in different forms. - E-Mail address sales@chempak.co.uk Also see under each of their own headings.
