ICHNEUMON FLIES - a garden friend because the females lay eggs in caterpillars
which become the host of the resulting larvae
IMBRICATE - if indicates that the petals
are over lapping.
INFLORESCENCE - the name for the complete flower.
INSECTICIDE -to control insects. These
chemicals are applied to the plant themselves or as a drench to the soil around them to
control the pest. These chemicals work in several ways. a) By direct contact. By
leaving a deposit on the leaves so that eating or walking on the leaf kills them. c)
Chemical being absorbed by the plant into its sap killing sap sucking insects.
Insecticides are available in different forms; sprays, aerosols, dusts, smokes,
granular form and thermal vaporisers.
INSECTS - friend and foe look under separate headings.
INTER SPECIFIC HYBRID - a hybrid of two different species from the
same genus. This should be indicated by having the generic name followed by an
x and then the specific name. If interspecific hybrid fuchsias were written in
this manner there would be less confusion. i.e. Fuchsia x Mary, Fuchsia x
Whiteknights Ruby
INTERNODAL CUTTINGS - pieces of stem taken for vegetative propagation from between
nodes. Also see Hardwood cuttings
INTERNODE - a node is where a leaves or buds are attached to the stem, so
internodal is any part of the stem between two nodes.
IRON - only becomes deficient in alkaline soils and then only to certain plants
which does not include fuchsias
